What we do
The mission of UT Health San Antonio’s Military Health Institute (MHI) is to enhance the collaborative efforts of the university with local, state and federal government and non-governmental organizations to improve the health and resiliency of our nation’s military service members, veterans and their families through advances in education, research and health care.
MHI assists in educating PIs on securing DoD Grant funding. Faculty, staff and students are also educated on areas related to the advancement of military health treatments that we discover to assist injuries/illnesses specific to issues that our military members and their families face. We educate medical professionals and researchers on caring for military members from the battlefield to home field and full integration back into society. We provide medical professionals with the tools they need to get innovative research projects funded for the advancement of health for all.
With a yearly average of over $15 million in DoD-funded research, UT Health San Antonio has a well-deserved reputation for working with the DoD and VA. The university’s key areas of strength, with respect to research with the DoD and VA, include:
- Behavioral Health – post-traumatic stress disorder, pain and substance use disorders
- Trauma – traumatic brain and blast injuries, burns, blood and coagulation research
- Cancer – liver, breast, prostate and others
The MHI hosts ongoing grant workshops to guide researchers through various aspects of the DoD and VA funding process. See past presentations from these workshops below.
