If you're a Veteran with a vehicle registered with the State of Texas and displaying a disabled Veteran, Purple Heart specialty license plate, you may use certain toll roads free of charge.
Which toll roads are included in TxDOT's veteran toll waiver program? In the Austin area, eligible veterans will be able to drive free of charge on:
- Loop 1,
- SH 45 North,
- SH 45 Southeast and
- SH 130 (Segments 1-4) from I-35, North of Georgetown to US 183 South of Austin.
(This seems to include all toll roads in the Austin area at the time of this writing.)
Also, eligible veterans will be able to travel free of charge on the Camino Colombia toll road, which is SH 255 near Laredo, and SH 99 (Segment I-2) from I-10 south to Fisher Road, near Baytown.
You do not need to sign up or enroll to receive the discount. If your vehicle's license plate is not correctly identified by the tolling equipment and you are charged for your tolls, contact the TxTag Customer Service Center at 1-888-468-9824.
Please note that if you travel on a toll road not owned by TxDOT, you may (and, at the time of this writing, are likely to) incur a fee. Each tolling agency has its own rules regarding toll-exempt vehicles.
