VA - Campus Toolkit

About the VA Campus Toolkit

The VA Campus Toolkit was created by the National Center for PTSD, in conjunction with the VA's Veterans Integration to Academic Leadership (VITAL) program. The National Center for PTSD is a VA center of excellence for research and education on the prevention, understanding, and treatment of PTSD. The VITAL program is a VA office of Mental Health Services (MHS) community engagement initiative designed to assist student Veterans to meet their educational goals through collaborative efforts with higher education institutions, on-campus clinical therapy and care management services.

This toolkit provides faculty, staff, and administrators resources to support student Veterans. The Post 9/11 GI Bill is bringing student Veterans to campuses in record numbers. Our aim is to help campuses welcome these men and women by recognizing who they are, and understanding their unique experiences, adjustments, and needs.

Who Are Today's Student Veterans?
Student Veterans are growing in number on college campuses. In 2009, there were approximately 500,000 Student Veterans receiving education benefits. In 2013, over 1,000,000 student Veterans are using their GI benefits to pursue advanced educational opportunities, and this number is estimated to increase by 20% in the next few years. Review the section below to learn more about the Student Veteran population.
