ELIGIBILITY:

To be eligible for dental care, a veteran must be 100% service connected (SC), have a SC disability rating condition, be a former Prisoner of War for 90 days or more, or have a medical condition which is adjunct or aggravated by a SC disability. Also dental care may be provided to complete an episode of treatment which was initiated while the veteran was an inpatient.

PROFESSIONAL AND AUXILIARY STAFF:

The Dental Clinic staff is a group of caring, compassionate individuals working together for excellence.? That team effort is directed and dedicated to providing compassionate, quality care through trust, respect, and integrity.? The staff consists of 14 top-notch dentists, 6 highly qualified dentists in a one year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency Program, 3 dental hygienists, and 17 dental assistants.

GENERAL PRACTICE SECTION:

Responsible for the diagnosis, management and treatment of oral/dental disease that does not require the expertise of a dental specialist.? This includes treatment planning, restorative dentistry and dental procedures generally considered the purview of the general practitioner commensurate with their level of training.

SPECIALTY CLINICS:

PERIODONTICS SECTION: Responsible for the diagnosis, management and treatment of patients with diseases of the periodontium, and for the Preventive Dentistry Program.ENDODONTICS SECTION: Responsible for the diagnosis, management and treatment of patients with diseases of the dental pulp and periapical tissues.ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SECTION: Responsible for the diagnosis, management and treatment of patients requiring oral and maxillofacial surgery care, and with the coordination of care with other surgical specialties as appropriate.ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL PATHOLOGY/RADIOLOGY: Responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of conditions beyond the purview of the general practitioner or other dental specialists. Responsible for dental radiology procedures, safety and quality.PROSTHODONTIC SECTION: Responsible for the diagnosis, management and treatment of patients requiring prosthodontic care.GERIATRIC SECTION: Responsible for the diagnosis, management and treatment of the oral health care needs of the elderly.DENTAL LABORATORY SECTION: Provides comprehensive dental laboratory support to the Dental Service, including fabrication of routine and complex dental appliances.

PROGRAMS:

Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD): This program is an excellent one year AEGD residency program. The program has a strong emphasis on all disciplines of clinical general dentistry and includes care of the medically compromised patient, implantology, periodontal surgery, IV sedation certification, oral pathology, advanced endodontics, and advanced prosthodontics.Dental Hygiene: This program is an affiliation with the?University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Dentistry. Students rotating through the Geriatric dental clinic are introduced to a wide variety of techniques used in dental hygiene and patient education.
